In a remote and gothic library, a young man has been set to research the papers of Lord Ruthven, and comes across a reference he doesn’t understand. What are the “rites” celebrated at Medmenham? Why does the owner of the library urge him not to linger after dark? When he does, who are the young ladies he meets, and why are they so amazingly forward and compliant?
